The Youngdahl Lecture series is a signature program of the Brown School and includes a legacy of nationally-prominent speakers. The 2018 Youngdahl keynote will be delivered by Louis W. Sullivan, MD. From being the founding dean of Morehouse School of Medicine – the first predominantly black medical school established in the 20th Century – to serving as the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Dr. Sullivan has devoted his career to advancing public health and medicine, reducing inequities in the medical field, and bridging ideological divides.

As the U.S. Secretary of HHS from 1989 to 1993 during President George H.W. Bush’s administration, Dr. Sullivan took on the tobacco industry, championed on behalf of victims of AIDS and expanded leadership opportunities for people of color. In 2005, Dr. Sullivan formed the Sullivan Alliance to strengthen the capacity and quality of the nation’s health workforce by increasing the number of ethnic and racial minorities within the health professions.

Dr. Sullivan also serves as chairman of the board of the National Health Museum (NHM) in Atlanta, Georgia, whose goal is to improve the health of Americans by enhancing health literacy and advancing healthy behaviors. Recently, Dr. Sullivan co-founded Toward Re-Uniting, a new initiative that provides a platform for candid dialogues that build trust, empathy, and help reunite our divided country.
