“Federal support for engineering research, interdisciplinary science, and diversity, equity, and inclusion”

Hosted by the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Abstract: Federal agencies have well-established funding aligning to academic disciplines, such as biomedical engineering or computer science. More recent opportunities provide resources for cross-cutting projects that span traditional fields, generating innovative and transformative approaches across collaborative teams. Federal programs provide a range of opportunities to support basic and applied projects, but this range can be difficult for scientists to navigate.

Federal support to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has its own narrow and broad opportunities, from foundational social and educational sciences, through direct funding of STEM research, to development of regional and nationwide networks. This talk will provide orientation to federal research and DEI opportunities at the National Science Foundation, with comparisons and partnerships to other agencies. I hope to provide understanding of what is opportune, where to explore, who to contact, and how to take first steps.
